Our Mission
A Theatre Group is dedicated to keeping live performance alive in Silverton through diverse programming that brings our community together. From intimate play readings and dynamic improv performances to cabaret nights and collaborations with local schools, we create accessible theatrical experiences that celebrate both our artistic heritage and our evolving creative spirit. We believe theatre thrives when it adapts to its community's needs and creates space for voices both familiar and new.
Our Story
A Theatre Group began in January 1989 when community members gathered at the Public Library to read plays together. What started as weekly readings quickly grew into full productions, and by September we had incorporated as a nonprofit. Through our first 21 seasons, we produced over 147 shows and became a cornerstone of Silverton's cultural life.
For 15 years, we called the historic Miners Union Hall home, investing over $400,000 in restoration that preserved this important piece of Silverton heritage while creating a vibrant performance space. During this time, we launched innovative programs including our New Artist Series, bringing prominent playwrights for three-week residencies, and established the Southwest Colorado Community Theatre Festival.
Today, we've returned to our grassroots origins, performing in restaurants, hotels, and community spaces throughout town. While we no longer have a permanent venue, this has allowed us to bring theatre directly to where people gather, continuing our tradition of making live performance an integral part of Silverton life.
Community Impact
Our commitment to community runs deep. We've partnered with Silverton School since 1990, supporting student productions and providing equipment and expertise. Our summer youth programs have served local families for decades, offering the only organized summer activities for children in town.
Currently, our programming includes regular improv performances, community play readings, and special events like cabaret nights. We continue to collaborate with the school when opportunities arise and remain dedicated to ensuring that live theatre remains accessible and relevant to our mountain community.
